In a week utterly dominated by the environment surrounding Pharrell's head, be they hat-related or musical (seriously, how does the guy appear on like every other track that hits the net?), we look elsewhere for our week's top tracks...

Featuring the velveteen pipes of LA noir&B crooner BANKS, Northern Ireland's sonic prodigy, SOAK, the debut from rap upstart Dominique Young Unique, as well as efforts from Mykki Blanco and ASTR, here's what we reckoned was the cream of the crop from the past seven days.

  • Artist: SOAK
  • Track Name: 'Blud'
  • Location: Northern Ireland

  • Author: Hector Barley

SOAK has a lot going for her. Not only is Bridie Monds-Watson (doesn't roll off the tongue as easily as SOAK) a mere 17 years old, she's also being endorsed by the brilliant Chvrches, having toured with the Glaswegian trio and is releasing her debut single 'Blud' on their label Goodbye Records. Her music is spellbinding, proving that she isn't constrained by the 'singer-songwriter' label; 'Blud' manages to combine Bridie's mesmerizing, unique voice and engaging songwriting to excellent effect.

She's got one of the funnest names to say, but don't let that fool you - Florida's own Dominique Young Unique's new monster of a track 'Throw It Down' effortlessly blends club and hip hop in a unique way (pun intended). She started dropping mixtapes at the age of 19 and now at 21, she's not only making me feel like I haven't done much in just as many years by collaborating with Diplo and DJ Fresh on her hit song from Kick Ass 2, she's also gone up against the likes of N.E.R.D, Die Antwoord, Big Boi, and Gucci Mane. Not bad for a girl who hasn't even released her debut album (coming later in 2014 on Epic). Stream 'Throw It Down' below.

  • Artist: Mykki Blanco
  • Track Name: 'She Gutta'
  • Location: California, USA
  • Link: Facebook
  • Author: Ana Leorne

Back in December Mykki Blanco shared a new song, 'Booty Bamboo', along with a few lines regarding her unsigned status (and not caring), making it pretty clear that it wouldn't prevent her from releasing new material. And now here it is, a brand new track produced by Jeremiah called 'She Gutta', reminding us why we fell in love with Blanco in the first place. Listen below.

  • Artist: BANKS
  • Track Name: 'Brain'
  • Location: California, USA
  • Link: Facebook
  • Author: Tarynn Law

The blogosphere has been swooning over BANKS for quite some time, and if you aren't on board yet, her new track 'Brain' produced by Shlohmo is a good place to start. Of course, if you're as much of a fan of her work as we are, you'll love it as well. It's a heavy hitting track that sticks to that dark sound we've come to know and adore from her, and you can stream it below.

  • Artist: ASTR
  • Track Name: 'Blue Hawaii'
  • Location: New York, USA
  • Link: Facebook
  • Author: Chris Taylor

Still continuing to sound like a version of Purity Ring that got absolutely smashed and dominated the club dancefloor until kicking out time, ASTR have returned with the latest cut from their upcoming EP.

'Blue Hawaii' sees excitable drum beats skittering around house thuds that would cause any dancefloor to shake. Zoe Silverman's breezily sexy vocals swirl through Adam Pallin's addictively catchy production, making it nigh on impossible to sit still. It's a track that will, no doubt, make its way into the arsenal of club DJs who really want to show off that they know their stuff. If you want more, ASTR's full EP, Varsity, is streaming on Soundcloud too!
