While Big Thief is currently between albums, their singer Adrianne Lenker has a solo record called abysskiss coming out through Saddle Creek on October 5th. We've already heard the gorgeous 'cradle' from the record, and today she shares a stunning second sampling in the form of 'symbol'. She has this to say about the track:

"While I was resting for a week between tours, 'symbol' came through. I think it was born out of the feeling of wanting to feel at home somewhere amidst the blur of constant travel. Writing it helped me articulate the recognition of a very deep sense of home contained within the warmth of my loved ones and friends made visible in something as simple as a smile."

Lenker is not keen to divulge the full meanings of her lyrics, and often her words are better off left just to linger and form their own meanings in the listener's mind. That is certainly still the case with 'symbol', but the warmth of home that she speaks of in the above quote is certainly tangible in the song's welcoming acoustic guitar and delicate percussive tapping. Lenker's saying that 'symbol' "came through" is significant; it feels as though she is channeling her emotions into the ethereal and imagistic lyrics; you might pick up on tangible images, like smiles, or more intangible feelings of endlessness. Ultimately, 'symbol' leaves you asking questions that bring delightful memories to mind. Check out 'symbol' below.
