Margate, Kent is turning into a hotspot for both established and emerging music, and it's no surprise that the influence of increased art in the area is also giving rise to brand new artists. The latest to arise is BABii, a young woman who reportedly already has a stash of songs prepared, and has signed to Deathwaltz Originals for the release of her debut album in 2019. Today she's put out debut single in the form of the clicking and woozy 'Phantom'.

Posting on Facebook, the effusive BABii says of the track "ii MADE iiT A REALLY LONG TiiME AGO WHEN MY BRAiiN BROKE A BiiT... ALSO SHOUTOUT TO MY POPPA ADE (AKA Adrian Sherwood) FOR PRETTY MUCH BEiiNG THE CATALYST FOR BABii AND JUMPiiNG iiN ON THiiS SONG AND MAKiiNG iiT SOUND BiiGGER AND WiiLDER."

The broken brain is noticeable from the first lines, where she intones "I lost my breath to phantom... I lost my tongue, when I used my lungs"; although she sings serenely, there's a palpable mania hovering under the surface, emphasised by the insistent clicks and dazed synths. This bombastic personality starts to make itself known as 'Phantom' continues; the bass throbs and bumps and the synths start to ooze up like green ghouls out of the ground, creating a hallucinatory groove that is irresistible. BABii comes to the fore with her encoded but mesmeric vocal, like a neon light guiding us down a dark path, she lures us on while also warning of her hazardous nature: "should've been a forest fire." By then it's too late, we're swept into BABii's glitzy lair, where the beat is in our bones, the perfectly pitched chimes have infested in our mind, and there's no going back.

Keep up with the exciting new artist by following her on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
