We've made no secret about our excitement around London-based expectation-subverters black midi here, so it's no surprise to find us frothing about their latest single 'Talking Heads', which has just hit the net. The new tune is expectedly weird, but with an accessible thread running through it, which is exactly what they're going for, according to band leader Geordie Greep:

“We've always tried to make it heavy but danceable, melodic but good rhythms... It is accessible music, there are experimental aspects that we've taken from when we went crazy at the beginning, we've just reigned it in to make something that is pop music.”

This time around black midi have certainly put more emphasis on the good rhythms than the heaviness, with 'Talking Heads' being their most skeletal track to date. Dazzling percussion work from Morgan Simpson gives the track its underlying twitchiness, and the rest of the band pile on more wiggling guitars, bass and vocals to create a hip-jerking scarecrow of a song. Greep, as ever, is magnetic in his role as front man, harnessing the electricity of the band's dextrous playing and channeling it through his body into a scattering of mad man vocal ejaculations: "I call this poem 'disappearing tongue'." This results in 'Talking Heads' being a wirey and shocking post-punk party tune - another to add to black midi's slowly growing pile of misshapen beauties.

While we still don't have news about an album from black midi, they certainly have a long stretch of live dates ahead:
