A month or two ago Christine and the Queens returned from a brief absence with the excellent 'Girlfriend' and the promise of an announcement of a new album soon. This week Héloïse Letissier has made good on her promise by unveiling plans to release a new album called Chris on September 21st. She has also shared another brand new song called 'Doesn't Matter'.

"Chaleur Humaine was about teenage years, most of it,” says Christine, and it seems she's keen to move on from that on album two, judging by the singles released so far which tackle adult themes. 'Girlfriend' was a sexually charged song about desire, and now 'Doesn't Matter' finds Christine questioning her place in the universe, as she explains: "It’s a crisis song that I wrote late one night... This song is a cathedral, with a rhythm as unalterable as white stone. The bass line, I remember playing it for hours, as if to rock myself.”

You can hear why she took such comfort in the bassline, as its steady, warm and propulsive, in conjunction with an effective boom-bap beat moving 'Doesn't Matter' forward on fleeted-footed pop production. The slickness of the track ensures that the weight of the topic discussed doesn't get bogged down, even as Christine is unloading her deepest thoughts. We move into the chorus, where gorgeous synths deftly backlight our singer, the central question rolled around becomes a perfect hook that has surely been whispered in the backs of each of our minds: "It doesn't matter does it... if I believe in god and if god does exist?" With the natural effervescence of Christine and the Queens the burden of existence becomes shared between listeners, and 'Doesn't Matter' becomes an anthem of clueless unity.

'Doesn't Matter' is also available in French as 'Doesn't Matter (voleur de soleil)', and in fact the entirety of Chris will be released in both English and French. Check out both versions of 'Doesn't Matter' below.
