Jamila Woods has been leaving impressions everywhere she displays her fierce art ever since she first emerged from the Chicago scene. Therefore it's with no shortage of excitement that we bring you the news that she's announced her second studio LP LEGACY! LEGACY! for release on May 10th.

The first track to be shared from the album is 'Zora', named for the writer Zora Neale-Hurston, as Woods explains: “My weaponry is my energy... An antidote for the feeling of being judged on first glance. A salve for when people think they know you better than you know yourself. It's about refusing to be essentialized and not allowing your identity to be put in a box. You contain multitudes. You are ever-evolving. A song to get free from stereotypes & assumptions, inspired by the writing of Zora Neale-Hurston.”

The track continues to push Woods' genre-layering pop sound in ways that inspire and ignite self-belief. 'Zora' bounces forth on classic-sounding beats, while all around are finely-produced washes of harp and feathered flashes of slick instrumentation. In the centre of it is Jamila Woods, standing tall in her vocal as she expresses herself fearlessly, taking pride in her background and upbringing, before re-settling the focus on her audience as she tells them with grace and fortitude "you will never know everything/ I will never know everything... you will never know me, couldn't possibly." 'Zora' is an uplifting proclamation of everyone's individuality and the multitudes contained within us that can guide us to our own personal freedom if we believe in ourselves.

'Zora' comes with a video directed by Vincent Martell, who says "In our society, a black body unapologetically taking up space is revolutionary in itself. Jamila goes even further by rocking out to a song named after Zora Neale Hurston in a library filled with hundred of thousands of pieces of black literature. The production is a celebration of black people living in their essence and that undeniable energy transmits on camera."

Jamila Woods' LEGACY! LEGACY! is out on May 10th via Jagjaguwar (pre-order). Check out an in-depth interview with Woods about the album over at Dazed.
