Jenny Hval has long been a favourite on The 405, so it's with great excitement that we bring you the news of a new 4-track EP from the Norwegian artist and musician. The Long Sleep is a new collection of songs set for release through Sacred Bones on May 25th.

As ever, Hval is experimenting on her new release. Each of the 4 tracks on The Long Sleep are taken from the same compositional motives, but allowed to manifest in different ways. This has moved her a long way from the horror-inflected topics of her last album Blood Bitch into the liminal space between waking and dreams, the 24 minute release encompassing this broad and inchoate space, in which Hval comes out to play with as much glee as we have always known from her.

Opening track and first single 'Spells' is a six minute piano-led art-pop track that beautifully induces you into a state of wakeful dreaming. As the watery piano introduces you to this space, the plush soundscape is fleshed out by additional horns, percussion and synthesizers from collaborators Håvard Volden and producer Lasse Marhaug, along with a cast of talented players from the jazz world (Kyrre Laastad on percussion, Anja Lauvdal on piano, Espen Reinertsen on saxophone, and Eivind Lønning on trumpet). Into this fantastical world Hval jauntily sings in her usual thought-provoking and seductive manner. When she gets to the song's main hook of "you will not be awake for long," you can feel your eyes getting heavy as you're being pulled into this other plain of existence, and you feel blissful in letting yourself go. From there, layers of playful vocals, expansive synth and guitar work and the overall aura created by Hval and her collaborators will engulf you and take you deeper into the rabbit hole.

As well as The Long Sleep coming out on May 25th (pre-order here), Hval also has her debut novel coming out. It's called Paradise Rot and will be published by Penguin Random House for release on October 2nd; more info here. She’s also going on tour, including a London date at St. John on Bethnal Green on 5th June. Full dates are below:
