Norwegian multidisciplinary artist Jenny Hval is a perennial favourite here on The 405, so it's with no shortage of excitement that we share the news that she'll be releasing a new album called The Practice Of Love on September 13th through Sacred Bones. It features contributions from Vivian Wang, Laura Jean Englert, and Félicia Atkinson. She has also shared a new song called 'Ashes to Ashes'.

Introducing this new body of work, the enigmatic Hval explained that what the album conveys is "the voice of someone who was once an angry teenager, furious at the hierarchies, many years later. No longer angry, but still feeling apart from the mainstream. . . longing for community. I wanted to give the feeling of being apart from the world a mystical, but beautiful place, meaning pop songs... A place that also contains enough depth to bury oneself in.”

This whirlwind of ideas can certainly be heard in the cinematic unfolding of 'Ashes to Ashes'. Always an utterly compelling storyteller, Hval here introduces us to a beleaguered woman who dreams of a beautiful song about burial, and what happens from there is a matter of where you want your imagination to take you. Hval's voice soars high over the lightly syncopated beats, which patiently but perfectly progress as 'Ashes to Ashes' unspools. While she sings of the protagonist's mind expanding in the memory of the dream, Hval's electronics blossom into a light techno track, and they continue to evolve magically from there. There is an undeniable feeling of spiritual uplifting by the conclusion of 'Ashes to Ashes', which is surely one of Hval's most accomplished works yet.
