Mikal Cronin recently made his long-awaited return to solo material with 'Show Me', the first song to be shared from the forthcoming album Seeker, which is out on October 25th. Today he's shared another song from the record, the opening track 'Shelter'.

In Cronin's words “This is a song about searching for answers in an uncertain world. It’s about the observer reluctantly stepping out of their comfort zone and looking around, while trying to keep their head straight. Musically, it’s dense and polyrhythmic. The string line weaves it all together for me. When writing a song with a lot of additive looping rhythmic parts, I think of Brian Eno.”

The noted density of the instrumentation on 'Shelter' is certainly evident from the song's opening moments, as a fuzzed-out undertone conjoins with polyrhythms and a loping bass line. The melody soon follows in the form of cresting violins, and Cronin is happy to just let that beautiful concoction sit for a little while before starting to sing. When his voice does come in, he's in his usual relatable everyman mode, singing of escaping life for pastures new, while the ever-present strings add an epicness to his vision. 'Shelter' rouses itself into a resounding and dramatic finale, with tense strings and electrifying guitar clashing atop the insatiable rhythms, right up until the last gasp.
