Although she has four studio albums under her belt, Mitski really shot to prominence with her last album, 2016's Puberty 2. The power of the album has placed her as one of the most talked about and sought after artists currently working - even Lorde asked her to go on a nationwide tour together. It is therefore exciting to announce that Mitski will be releasing a fifth album entitled Be The Cowboy on August 17th through Dead Oceans.

Mitski has revealed that she took on something of a persona for the tracks that make up Be The Cowboy, someone who she describes as “a very controlled icy repressed woman who is starting to unravel." She dives deeper into this persona, saying "Because women have so little power and showing emotion is seen as weakness, this ‘character’ clings to any amount of control she can get. Still, there is something very primordial in her that is trying to find a way to get out.”

This primordial version of her can certainly be heard in the album's opening track and lead single 'Geyser'. Just as its title suggests, the song builds and explodes in barely-controlled emotions and instrumentation, all in under 2-and-a-half minutes. It all starts with a walloping slab of organ and Mitski intoning like a priest bringing herself to slaughter. The song then builds on stately drums as she excoriates herself over the mistakes she's made, before exploding in stadium sized aural fireworks and a rebirth of our central star.

'Geyser' comes with a video by Zia Anger, which is shot in a single take and shows Mitski running down a grey and blustery beach, physically enacting the crushing waves of feeling in the song. It's a truly compelling clip.

Be The Cowboy comes out on August 17th. Mitski will be heading to the UK shortly after to play the songs live, catch her here:
