Nilüfer Yanya continues to impress. Adding to the handful of incredible singles released so far, the London singer has this week put out another new song and video called 'Heavyweight Champion of the Year', while still keeping us in suspense about when she might be putting out a debut album. It's not too frustrating though, as each of her songs and videos has more than enough in it to keep you thinking.

'Heavyweight Champion of the Year' plays pretty much as a sequel to previous single 'Thanks 4 Nothing'; both dealing with a tough break up, but from different points in the emotional arc. The previous song saw her coolly dismissing her former fling, while 'Heavyweight Champion' finds her a little more insecure - "I'm still wired" she sings over spare a vicious electric guitar strums. Intertwining her perfectly yelping voice with the savage guitar strokes gives us a picture of a woman reaching the end of her tether - but soft coos and atmospheric instrumentation around the edge are also there to soothe the hurt. It's another well-rounded portrait of emotional turbulence from the brilliant young songwriter.

Nilüfer Yanya not only wrote the song, but co-produced it and created the video for it, which you can watch below.
