Perfume Genius put out one of the landmark albums of the decade with No Shape in 2017, and we're waiting with baited breath for what he has next. Well, it's not a studio album, but he has revealed that he is part of a new project called The Sun Still Burns Here, a dance and music project with choreographer Kate Wallich. It's an evening long performance piece created by the two and stars Mike Hadreas (Perfume Genius) and the dance company The YC. The show debuts in October, but Perfume Genius has shared a 9-minute track from the piece called 'Eye In The Wall'; he says:

“I think of ‘Eye in the Wall’ as a cosmic peep show... Watching, being watched, dancers unlatched from the Matrix and truly LIVING. Creating new rituals on the other side. Whole bodies braiding, spit glowing in the dark and a camera floating just above. We spent a lot of time in the studio alternating between the math of the song and the magic of it — which was very much like the process of creating the dance itself. Working with Kate Wallich and YC, really being with my body, really being with other bodies - there is control and a real formula but a portal opened up in parallel that is completely free and overwhelmingly full of feeling.”

'Eye In The Wall' is rhythmically led, as you might expect of a dance piece but there's more depth beyond the beats. In fact it does indeed slither and creep like "a cosmic peep show," with Perfume Genius' voice sounds alien among the percussive and atmospheric elements, a gleaming orb in the midst of thick black velvety smoke. Of course, across 9 minutes 'Eye In The Wall' re-coils and morphs several times, leading you absolutely in a pied-piper like chant through its twisted tale.
