Inspiration can often be painful, but that of Poliça's Channy Leaneagh has to be one of the most excruciating. In early 2018, she was cleaning ice off the roof of her house, when she slipped off and shattered her L1 vertebrae and severely bruised her spine. The fact that Poliça are already back with a new album is testament to her determination to overcome and reclaim her life.

This of course meant writing and recording new material, and Poliça will share their new album When We Stay Alive on January 31 2020. That might seem like a long way off but we've got first single 'Driving' to sink our teeth into. Leaneagh says about the track:

"Laying in bed, as I healed from a 10 foot fall of carelessness with my life, I would dream of running in green grass and tears would pour from my eyes... That is a feeling to hold onto; that life is worth living even when all the towers are crumbling and this goes beyond my own little accident but the world around me. Following the crone into the sinking ship and having the chance to return without a shadow. Drive on, Drive on. A second chance you won’t forget.”

'Driving' is not an overtly triumphant or uplifting song, instead weighed down by the dark reality of the situation. Polića's synth-work is atmospheric, allowing the vocal plenty of room to indulge in the beautiful images of the outside world. 'Driving' doesn't remain in the mire, it allows in rhythm, brightness and curiosity, and soon we can feel the vivacious propulsion towards the light at the end of the tunnel.
