The disbandment of cult Australian act Royal Headache was a tough one to take, but thankfully our pain can now be assuaged by the emergence of Shogun and the Sheets, the new band from iconic singer Shogun. What's Your Rupture? has signed them, and will be releasing a 7" with two new songs 'Hold On Kid' and 'Pissing Blood' on November 2 - although you can hear them both digitally today.

Never one to play ball, Shogun tells us that “There's no real message in these songs. I think I keep my lyrics ambivalent deliberately. I like it when you can feel a meaning or presence in a song but you can't pinpoint what it is. That way the listener can create their own meaning.”

With a voice as versatile and cinematic as Shogun's, it is indeed easy to take a flight of fancy off whatever he and his musical cohorts release. These two do seem to be of a pair though, as they describe young men fighting their way through tough times. In the frantic 'Hold On Kid' we're treated to a headlong rush of guitars, underscored by a rip tide of pianos and organ, Shogun forceful and crafty in his vocal line, sailing around the curves provided by The Sheets with style and compassion.

Shogun and the Sheets slow things down a bit for 'Pissing Blood', but the drama is vaulted upwards as they set out a tension-filled blues-rock song where the guitars slice and echo across the song, while the piano dances beneath. Shogun makes this his own, sweeping from the confessional to the committed, his voice fully embodying the passion of all the players in the song, which leads us into a red-hot and steamy guitar solo peak.

Although they've only announced this 7" for now (pre-order), the prospect of more music to come from Shogun and the Sheets seems good, as he says making music is "all I really want to do. Everything else is just kind of in the way.” So check back for more information about that very soon, hopefully.
