Sampa The Great has already made quite an impression with her debut mixtape Birds and the BEE9, as well as tours with high profile musicians, but she's set to make her biggest statement yet with her debut album. The 19-track opus is called The Return and lands on September 13th via Ninja Tune.

The Return is Sampa fully expressing her ambition, attempting to dig deeper into her African heritage and share that with as wide an audience as possible. That can certainly be heard on new single 'OMG', about which Sampa comments:

“I personally feel that people on the continent have a duty to our family in the diaspora, to re-teach our culture, language, spirituality, ways and return our peeps to ourselves... To me ‘OMG’ sounds like the songs we heard in our childhood. It’s broadly about flexing your culture! Loving where you’re from and even being shocked at the realisation of not knowing how dope it is to be ‘who you are’.”

'OMG' starts with mounds of potential energy in its patient clicks and Sampa's rasping breathing, catching her breath before she charges headlong into her dextrous flow. Before long, the beat builds to incorporate more diverse sounds, the beautiful energy of the African continent echoing out of the rhythms. As the complexity of beat and production of 'OMG' ramps up, Sampa's joy audibly increases, her quick-witted flow tripping perfectly over the beats, until we're into the swirling and infectious repetition of the title to conclude.

The video for 'OMG' was shot between South Africa and Botswana, and features Sampa The Great's parents. Check it out below.
