Perth's Stella Donnelly will be releasing her debut album Beware of the Dogs next Friday (March 8th) via Secretly Canadian. Having already delivered the biting 'Old Man' and heartbreaking 'Lunch', she gives us a final teaser with the adorably give-no-fucks 'Tricks'.

Stella comments on the track, saying: “This song is a playful zoom-in on the ‘Australian Idenitity’ and a loose dig at the morons that used to yell sh*t at me when I played cover gigs on Sunday afternoons. It probably served me right for singing ‘Wonderwall’ every weekend.”

"Playful" is certainly the right word for this upbeat pop rocker, but it's not without claws too. Throughout 'Tricks' Donnelly is relating instances of annoyance suffered from being surrounded by overly eager or zealous men who think they can prescribe how she should feel: "you said I'd look much better if I dropped the attitude." But, ever self-possessed, Donnelly dismisses them with a simple "leave it a lone," repeated over a breezy chorus. The humour doesn't stop there, as she takes down Australian nationalists who proudly sport Southern Cross tattoos, and the moment in the middle of 'Tricks' when she swaps the expected curse-word rhyme for a deliciously piss-taking accusation that these men "wanna get laid," is hilarious even a dozen listens later.

'Tricks' also comes with a perfectly humorous and adorable video, featuring Stella dancing around, being stalked by an over-keen man, directed by fellow excellent Australian singer Julia Jacklin. Check it out below.
