The buzz keeps getting louder and louder for Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton, Matt Kelvin and Morgan Simpson, who are known to a rapid and rabidly increasing many as—black midi. It’s becoming too difficult to ignore the hype surrounding this zany collective, and with the release of ‘Crow’s Perch,’ black midi’s third ever studio-recorded song, they surpass mere promise, cementing themselves as the year’s most exciting act.

Following the release of ‘Speedway’ at the end of January, the group’s second single (and eventual four-track EP) through Rough Trade, sets out to prove that there may be no one assembling sounds and moods quite like them. With Greep’s forlorn, but slightly feral voice pulling each instrument toward every direction, ‘Crow’s Perch’ meshes together elements of post-punk, jazz, krautrock and even sounds inspired by the video games the band dearly adores.

Comparably, ‘Speedway’ is calculated and thoroughly weaved together. However, their latest offering somehow maintains a sense of meticulous intent even though it eventually unravels like a messy spiderweb. With the energized unpredictability of Simpson’s drumming lending the track its inescapable feel, Picton’s pulsing bass remains steady and sticky, inevitably driving this experimental post-punk number head-on into a freight train of distortion and incoherent yelping at the three-minute mark.
