Having recently announced their signing to Rock Action Records, we knew it couldn't be long before The Twilight Sad would be putting out new music, and today they have returned with the epic 'I/M NOT HERE [missing face]' and some new tour dates.

Andy MacFarlane explains the song's seed, saying "I was attempting to play 'Ogives' by Erik Satie, but I'm really shit at the piano so it didn't happen, but I came up with the music using those chord shapes. So from my perspective, it's a bad cover version of that piece of music," which certainly sounds a lot more jovial than the excoriating song.

Singer James Graham adds that the song is "about my ongoing battle with not liking myself, trying to be a good person but constantly feeling like I’m failing myself and everyone I care about.” That sounds a bit more like what's on offer in 'I/M NOT HERE [missing face]'.

The track starts with tension high on wailing strings, before the band cuts through it with a propulsive kraut gait. The wailing persists and blends with the minor piano chords, creating a slightly seasick surface where Graham confesses his self-loathing in unforgiving terms, before he faces himself in the chorus and plainly states: "I can't stand to be around you anymore." The Twilight Sad then kick the song up a gear, with doubled-down menace and agitation, hurtling towards the soul-shredding coda where Graham's phobias have reached the point of paralysis and all he can yelp is "why do you do this to yourself?"
