The Twilight Sad started 2019 in fine fashion with their excellent album IT WON/T BE LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME and will be finishing it just as splendidly with a new AA-side 7" coming out on December 13th (limited to 1000 individually stencilled copies), although both songs are available online now. The two new tracks, 'Rats' and 'Public Housing', were recorded at the same time as IWBLTATT, but were kept aside:

"As the recording process [for IWBLTATT] progressed, we could tell that these two songs were a little different from the rest of the album," recalls frontman James Graham. "To me they felt heavier and lyrically they came from a place of complete despair. They started to stand out on their own separately from the album. They were songs we really liked and they weren’t just off cuts from the album either - we wanted them to stand on their own.

The same propulsive, burning jet fuel feeling from the album enlivens the bones of both 'Rats' and 'Public Housing', but as Graham states above, there is something more excoriating and vicious about them. There doesn't seem to much self-love within these two songs, James Graham is feeling utterly loathsome, and the guitars glint as their sharpness turns inwards.

'Rats' is a pure, balls-to-the-wall post-punk song, where James Graham barely has a moment to catch his breath amidst the onrushing onslaught of noise and pain. 'Public Housing' is slightly more measured, but it still reaches the doldrums of emotion, as he feels like he's inhabiting a re-awakened corpse, trudging through the grey streets, looking for some kind of emotion to pull him back to the human world.
