You may have seen Zubin Hensler travelling with The Westerlies as Fleet Foxes' horn section, or noticed him contributing to tracks by Son Lux, Daniel Rossen, and Half Waif. He’s known for his expertise as a trumpeter, but he also has a passion for the experimental: Hensler co-leads Found Sound Nation mentoring high school students on experimental sound composition and performance. Not to mention, he will be releasing a new album soon under his bedroom pop project, twig twig. Listen to the lead single, ‘It’s Late,’ below.

A drum machine keeps time among a slew of disparate parts on the new track. Hensler layers sounds from instrumentation filled with such lofty innocence, it could have originated in an elementary school’s music classroom. The lyrics, on the other hand, describe a tortured subconscious trapped in a darker reality. “Scary though it seems, I died in all my dreams,” Hensler sings, soon acknowledging his own blindness, a consummate symbol. And with a title like darkworld gleaming, one can only imagine that these motifs will not end with this track, and instead be carried consistently throughout the new record.
