Influence, with respect to the Laws record, played a much larger role than it had earlier in our recording career.

We wrote and recorded Laws from 2005-2009, and saw many listeners move away from a long form album experience to single song audio streams from the web. It became important that the songs we eventually chose for the record were able to stand alone as complete and satisfying little novellas.

For musicians, most music falls into the category of “someone else’s music”. At the risk of sounding asshole-like, our experience is somewhat compromised because we know the secrets. We know how certain sounds are achieved and the emotional response a note sequence or chord progression may evoke.

We hold “someone else’s music” to impossibly high standards. In order to truly embrace it we must first ask ourselves, “Do I love it? Does it make me want to dance around the apartment naked?.”

The tracks below influenced Laws to a degree that borders on plagiarism. Listen to the first 8 bars of Prince’s Controversy then listen to the first eight bars of Apartments -- that’s not a coincidence. Elsewhere, the influence is less direct and more an attempt to capture a similar voodoo.

An unfinished manuscript by Anton LaVey called Law of the Trapezoid influenced the lyrics throughout Laws. We were consumed by his Principle of Tonal Angularity, which states, "All obtuse angles are magically harmful to those unaware of this property. The same angles are beneficial, stimulating and energizing to those who are magically sensitive to them."

We encourage you to listen to each track and try to find the similarities. Post comments here or on our wall upon the book of faces. http://www.facebook.com/pages/OCTAVIUS/174383106276
