Here's the first glimpse of the highly anticipated Aaliyah biopic.

Due to premiere later this year via US TV network Lifetime, Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B stars Alexandra Shipp as the late singer (Disney starlet Zendaya abandoned the project due to criticism over her casting), but includes none of the singer's original songs since her family decided the project wasn't big enough: "She deserves to have a tribute much more grand than a television network debut that won't even consider the perspectives of those who were closest to Aaliyah," a representative from Aaliyah's estate explained.

The trailer - which can be seen below - features a scene in which a young Aaliyah is listening to her mother's advice regarding her career: "It takes more than some hot producer to create a superstar. It takes the right artist." The song is Iggy Azalea's 'Goddess'. Oh dear.
