2012 saw the production of Tze Chun's Cold Comes The Night being halted by Hurricane Sandy. To keep the troops entertained, star Bryan Cranston challenged the movie's production assistants to create a script for a short film to fill the downtime. He would select his favourite and then star in it and help it get made.

The winning entry came from production assistant Brandon Polanco, with a script entitled Writer's Block. Production began only three hours after Cranston picked it as his favourite, with fellow assistants Chaz Rose and Spenser Granese helping to create the film. Shot in black and white, the film follows Cranston as a struggling writer, desperately searching for inspiration to break that dreaded curse that is writer's block.
