Back in 1986, Cleveland hosted an event that would become known as Balloonfest '86; organised by the United Way, it was a fundraising effort that aimed to set the world record for biggest simultaneous balloon launch - yes, the state of Ohio thought it was definitely a good idea to fill the air with over 1.5 million helium-filled balloons (don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore balloons, but this stunt would have never get the go-ahead today).

Although volunteers worked day and night to make sure the monstrous amount of balloons were trapped in a net in the central Public Square ready for launch, the release caused numerous problems: some of the balloons got caught up in a storm and fell back to the ground, causing the local airport to be temporarily closed.
