Despite being the feel-good hit of the summer, Guardians of the Galaxy passed me by until a couple of weeks ago. Basically, I really liked it. I thought Avengers was funny, but there were some super funny bits in Guardians. Super funny.

It's a film that, maybe in spite of the gravity of the situation the film is centred around, doesn't take itself too seriously. That shows even in its soundtrack. Which is not your average superhero movie soundtrack, being based wholly on the beloved, mainly '70s-centric mixtape which is, along with the Walkman that encases it, Peter Quill's only reminder of home. Yes everyone loves Awesome Mix Vol. 1.

Long story short: it's getting the release it finally deserves. On a tape. A cassette tape. Previously available digitally, on CD and vinyl, the "authentic" version is being released on 17th November and, at least at first I guess anyway, is going to be available only through retailers associated with Record Store Day. Seems a bit… limiting? But oh well you'll be able to pick it up one day probably.

Fun fact: it is the first cassette released by the Disney Music Group since 2003 (thanks Wikipedia).

Oh, and here, I just found this "featurette", so why not watch some of the cast talk about the music of Awesome Mix Vol. 1 in the context of the actual filming of Guardians itself.
