Ah, Asobi Seksu, everybody’s favourite J-pop-grunge-postrock-shoegaze outfit that hail from Brooklyn via Japan. Last year’s Citrus was one of my favourite albums of 2007, a truly unique blend of genres with catchy hooks and simply gorgeous vocals. Me and Mary is the first single from their forthcoming third album, which many may find surprising as it just feels like they’ve just bounced onto the scene. The single is generally of a continuation from where they left from their previous work, which is by no means a bad thing. A fast-paced affair full of frantic energy, it wastes no time in leaping headfirst in, and is reminiscent of Goodbye to compare lazily to previous Seksu offerings. The drums compliment this well, a half-minute crescendo of a fill galloping into the finale.

The lyrics still remain somewhat incomprehensible at times; in fact it took me a couple of listens to figure out if the vocals were in Japanese (no) or English (yes). However, it is almost an irrelevance as Yuki Chikudate’s voice is just so darned hauntingly beautiful, bursting with pure effervescence. Mellow B-side Breathe Into Glass differs a fair amount, a departure from their more traditional wall of sound approach with emphasis more on hearing the vocals.

On the basis of this delectable single, the new album should be a welcome treat when released in the New Year. A Perfect cure for the post-new year come down during the dark days of January. Can’t wait.
