Venue: Bpop Festival Support Bands: Gabriella Cilmi, Asteroids Galaxy Tour, Wouter Hamel and others. Date: 05/05/09 Sixty-four years ago a time of horrific events marked by World War Two, slowly made way for times of hope and future. This year, the liberty festival or 'Bpop' in Haarlem celebrated our freedom for the 29th time. With a crowd of approximately 150.000 people today, the 5th of may festival has grown to be the biggest free festival in the Netherlands. With the size of the festival, every year, both national and internationals artists get a chance to perform and promote freedom. This year's line-up consisted of artists like the Australian singer Gabriella Cilmi (Sweet About Me) and the Danish band Asteroids Galaxy Tour (Around The Bend) as well as Dutch artists like Wouter Hamel and rockband De Staat. One of the first artists scheduled to perform was redhead Roosbeef. In the lashing rain, she was pressured to entertain and lift up the crowd. With her funky summery songs about anything from dogs and laundry that task wasn't too hard. Straight afterwards alternative pop band Asteroids Galaxy Tour took their turn on stage. Think Björk, The Cardigans and a little bit of Robbie Williams. Think pop, technicolour and everything in between. A wonderful set played by a band, barely a year old. Another striking band was the Dutch De Staat. This rock band released their first demo only two years ago, but now took place on the main stage of Bpop. With a huge crowd consisting of – mostly – fans, the band managed to play a proper rock show including a moshpit. However, when Gabriella Cilmi set foot on stage the party took off completely. With hitsingles like Sweet About Me and Sanctuary as well as amazing covers like Cry Me A River by Justin Timberlake, Cilmi left her marks. An amazing voice for a girl so young.
