Label: FatCat Records Release date: 22/02/2010 Website: http://www.myspace.com/frightenedrabbit ‘Swim Until You Can’t See Land’ should have seen Frightened Rabbit break through to the mainstream from their dedicated cult following. Despite being playlisted in coffee shops across the country, it didn’t quite make the cross over. Now the Selkirk band will try again with the release of the second single ‘Nothing Like You’ from their new album ‘The Winter Of Mixed Drinks’, due out in March. One of the most eagerly anticipated records of the year in certain quarters, this three-minute pop song just whets the appetite even more. Frightened Rabbit’s incisive lyrics always seem to revolve around frontman Scott Hutchison’s lack of luck in love and this is no different, when he sings in that oh-so-distinctive voice: “She was not the cure for cancer, and all my questions still ask for answers, there is nothing like someone new, and this girl she was nothing like you”. But despite this, the music is stirring and inspirational, perhaps one of Frabbit’s fastest and heaviest songs yet. This could be due to the recent expansion to a five piece, with former Make Model man Gordon Skene joining the band on keys and guitar. A stylish bassline and some potent piano suggests a more buoyant direction for the group’s music, hinting at more of a ‘band’ sound. Although they rectify this with the slow-burning and heart-breaking B-side ‘Learned Your Name’ showing they are still the perfect soundtrack to a lonely night in. Judging by the two releases so far, it’s looking like we should forget about it being just the Winter, we could be in for the Year Of Mixed Drinks. Photobucket What say you on this?
