Something of a contradiction in terms, perhaps, but it’s hard to separate the two when the song ‘borrows’ so liberally from an earlier Fuck Buttons track, Bright Tomorrow from their debut album Street Horrsing, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was actually a remix and not a new song altogether. If this were an essay it would be called ‘being lazy’ at best and ‘plagiarism’ at worst. The fact that they seem to be plagiarising themselves seems far worse than if they’d tried to rip off another bands sound. At least that could have been seen as paying homage to a band that had influenced them. Instead it would appear that they may be running out of ideas. I am a huge fan of Fuck Buttons. Street Horrrsing massively divided opinion, you either loved it or hated it, and there was very little middle ground. I felt that they had taken the idea of ‘noise music’ and infused it with a tribal rhythm with which to wrap their hazy noise soundscapes around. Some of the songs, maybe, dragged on a little too much but they were trying to add a pop sensibility to a genre which is notoriously ‘difficult’. They are also pretty amazing live, in the right setting, a dark cavernous room where the hugeness of their songs can take shape, building, from shimmering sounds, to enormous soundscapes which surround and overhwhelm the listener. Fuck Buttons have said that this song is a bridge between the new works and the old. I can only hope that once this bridge has been crossed there will be no going back, as far as the music is concerned.
