Label: ATP Recordings Release date: 12/10/09 Website: www.myspace.com/fuckbuttons Fuck Buttons are back with a new album, Tarot Sport. Having spent the last year touring all over Europe and the US, Fuck Buttons have managed to hone their craft and it is more than evident on their new full length. Having been initially disappointed with the first single/track from the new album I went into the album with low expectations. I thought that Fuck Buttons had blown all their ideas with their first album, how wrong I was. Heard in context with the entire album I have revised my opinion of Surf Solar. It’s an impressive and charging opening track which paves the way for the rest of the album. It also seques perfectly into second track Rough Steeze with it’s distorted, roiling soundscape giving way to pulsing bursts of fuzz and then the drums kick in and the track is off and running. The bloops and bleeps of the various instruments employed by Fuck Buttons punctuate the ups and downs of the music. The Lisbon Maru is my favourite track on the album. Strangely enough it’s a song which also borrows an effect from a previous Fuck Buttons song Sweet Love For Planet Earth, albeit sped up this time around. I am willing to overlook it this time however when it’s used in such a beautiful way. Placed atop a martial drum beat the song pulses and flows and when it finally drops it’s nothing short of Euphoric. It’s a song I’m looking forward to hearing live where I’m sure it will have everyone in the crowd in the palm of its hand. The album is just shy of an hour long; with most tracks running over at least 8 minutes. It’s an album that really needs to be savoured in one sitting. Dipping in and out may not lessen the impact of the songs but the construction of the album is such that all tracks flow into one another. It’s like an hour long pick me up, such is the good feeling of each. A lot of people who dismissed Fuck Buttons on the first go round will hopefully be willing to admit that they were wrong. This is a band with a bright tomorrow ahead of them. Fuck Buttons are touring the UK soon. I would urge people to go and see them as they are a truly amazing spectacle live. Rating: 8/10
