As part of their current UK tour, US indie rockers Speedy Ortiz played the first of two London shows with a sold-out gig in Birthdays' basement on Tuesday night. Support came from London band Dig!, who opened the evening before the crowds started to pour in. By the time Bristol band Empty Pools hit the stage, the space was filling and the tempo, and temperature, was rising.

When the headliners came on the place was rammed with overly enthusiastic fans that consider pushing and shoving all part of a fun, sweaty, evening out, much to the consternation of the photographers in the front row. Encores are a rarity at these small gigs, which often fall under the dictates of venue curfews, but the Speedys were coaxed into performing one final song after their 13-song set came to end.
