When it comes to musical groups reforming and going back on tour, there's always a worry that, a) they're only in it for the money and b) they're passed 'it' - both of which can lead to a disappointing (and often expensive) experience. Leaving Brixton Academy last night after Jurassic 5's second of two London shows though - this was certainly not the case. In other words, Jurassic 5 still have 'it'.

From the word go, the six-piece (Jurassic 6?!) exploded with an energy that left me wondering the levels they could reach back in 1993 when they were all 20 years younger, and the crowd responded as J5 launched into a series of medleys that chunked an impressive back catalogue of classics. Whilst the energy was as high as any I've ever seen on stage, they still managed to remain in check - no doubt a skill they acquired through many a rehearsal, and years on the road.

Playing for almost two hours, the collective mixed it up to keep the fully responsive crowd on their proverbial toes and as DJ Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist partook in a somewhat bizarre scratch battle - it became apparent that this show was going to be so much more than just six guys on a stage churning out their hits. These kind of choreographed and well-executed theatrics continued throughout and whilst, at times, they hovered on the line between tacky and tasteful - I'm relieved to say they managed to remain on the latter side. Just.

Thankfully, these kind of theatrics didn't take away from the 'main event' - the music. Classics 'Concrete Schoolyard', 'What's Golden', and 'Thin Line', were all executed to perfection - with the crowd playing their part by creating a sea of bouncing five finger salutes - before going "way back" and playing material from their 1997 debut EP, some of which I admittedly had never heard before.

After an extended encore - which even included requests from the crowd - they left the stage with some heartfelt words of thanks to the people of the UK, rounding off what was as close to a perfect performance as I've ever seen. If you get the chance to see J5 - do it, you won't regret it.
