Wish You Were A Pony – an esoteric title, but then we've come to expect nothing less from self-described shoegazers, Lilies On Mars.

May marks the release of the London-based trio's eagerly-awaited second album, following on from their DIY debut in 2009, and it doesn't disappoint. Album opener, Retro, sets the tone with the lyric “I started to play melodies” - this record is melody heavy and makes greater use of Lisa Masia and Marina Cristafalo's perfect harmonising than their previous material.

The first single to be taken from the album, 'Aquarium's Key' is a stand-out track and a classic example of the kind of ethereal, dream-like pop Lilies on Mars are quickly becoming known for, with its visions of swimming underwater in a giant fish tank. I'm Confused It's OK is another haunting acoustic number that successfully plays on the Masia and Cristafalo's harmonising.

It's not all sweetness and light though; 'Crabs' and 'Lost Cause' bring a darker, rockier edge to proceedings, as does 'Angry Lullaby', which is exactly that – angry. Anguished wails and the gloriously bitter “there are visible signs you should see” suggest this is a band you probably don't want to piss off. Touches of folk on 'Hiding Under Water' round off an eclectic mix of influences that Lilies On Mars have incorporated into their sound. Also underpinning the album is Matthew Parker's skilled, rhythmic drumming, which subtly drives the music throughout.

Some might find Lilies On Mars' quiet introspection a little slow-going, and it's a valid point, but it's worth a repeat listen; these flowers are growers.
