Label: Idle Hands Records Release date: 22/11/10 Link: Myspace Comprising of ex-members of Meet Me In St Louis, Blakfish, Super Tennis and Youves’s current guitarist, you’d be mistaken if you were expecting Vietwow! to be thrashing out compositions of the distorted guitar, raw vocals and crashing drums variety. Instead, the DIY supergroup-of-sorts’s musical offerings are comparatively melodious and stripped back. Utilising a toy drum kit, and guitar melodies of the unpretentious type, Vietwow! merge Weezer-like simplicity with wonderfully descriptive lyrics about everyday situations. Lines such as “There’s a hole in my head that I can’t fix/ And I can’t find any lego bricks that fit” conjure up images akin to the stop-motion styling’s of Michel Gondry in ‘The Science of Sleep’ whereas the realms of menace anticipated in lyrics such as “If you ever leave me then I’ll fucking kill you” are dissolved away by the song’s more sentimental words and the soft gang vocals in the background. The double A-side single is released on the unusual format of a 5.25 floppy disk, as well as digitally, which, when coupled with the rawness of the songs, pushed apart from any overly polished production, add to the band’s roguish charm and cement Vietwow! as an outfit that deserve the attention of fans of Weezer and The Pixies alike.
