In the midst of the chaos and exhilaration of London Fashion Week, newly located in Soho, those without press passes could feel left out of the flurry of excitement. However, located for the first time in the aesthetic venue of Somerset House, the International Fashion Showcase is open to the general public throughout Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd. The theme of the fifth annual International showcase is the uplifting, optimistic umbrella of "Utopias". This is the opportunity to view the universal relevance of contemporary culture through the eyes of 80 emerging designers from 24 countries.
The entire space of the West Wing Galleries has remodelled to suggest an "imaginary terrain" where the international designers can share a positive vision of the future. The multiple showrooms are covering five continents and every individual room is arranged by country. Each designer presents a uniquely considered installation, featuring their clothing designs, in response to this year's themes of "Utopias". The exhibition boasts a delicate marriage between the frontiers of art and fashion through sustainability, intelligence and beauty. This is truly a carefully balanced display of conscious artistic intent and exquisite design! The showrooms emulate the exclusive nature of Designer Showrooms, but enable these carefully curated works to be brought to the public. This is an event where one could expect to see the beginning of many careers, and definitely worth visiting for both the design and the curation.
The exhibition is open to public viewing throughout Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd, from 10:00am until 6:00pm in the West Wing Galleries of Somerset House. The showcase also includes Spotlight Tours at 12:30pm and 4:30pm, with curators and fashion industry insiders who will choose their highlights from the International Fashion Showcase. Drop-in spaces are available, but limited. It is recommended to arrive 30 minutes before the tour start times for registration.
