Getting introduced to new characters through your favourite video game is part of the main appeal for many players. That said, there are some video game characters that will never be forgotten, regardless of the countless innovative and intriguing avatars that follow them. What’s more, it’s not always the heroes that stick in our minds. It can often be the baddies that go down in history as some of the most memorable. Whether you’re enjoying the latest first-person shooter title or playing free slots at House of Fun, facing up to a bad guy is sure to raise the tension regardless of the type of game you’re playing. So, without further ado, here are 4 of the most memorable video game villains of all time.

Dr. Robotnik

Arch-nemesis of Sonic the Hedgehog, Dr. Robotnik, who is also sometimes referred to as Dr. Eggman, is one of the most world-renowned video game villains in history. Aiming at global domination, the evil genius is also a robotics expert and uses his skills to steal and cause general chaos in Sonic’s world. One of the most unforgettable aspects of his personality is his total disregard for the other characters within the game. Many of his robotic contraptions don’t function on batteries but on tiny rabbits and squirrels stuffed inside to power the machine.

Ganon

Also called Ganondorf when in his humanoid form, Ganon is the antagonist in The Legend of Zelda game franchise. His character has changed a great deal throughout the entire series which was first released back in 1986. Most commonly he appears as one of two characters — either a demonic boar-like animal or a tall, muscular Gerudo — a race of nomadic desert humanoids. His arch-enemy is Link, the series’ protagonist, and his aims vary from game to game. In the past, they have included capturing Princess Zelda and conquering the world. One of the most terrifying aspects of Ganon’s character is that he can never be destroyed, like the devil reincarnated, he appears time and time again in a new form.

Albert Wesker

Although he originally appeared as a supporting character in the first Resident Evil game of the series, Albert Wesker quickly became one of the primary villains. Chillingly, his main aims as antagonist have included wiping out and replacing the entire human race, as well as creating a deadly virus to unleash upon the population. Wesker is widely known for his superhuman strength and speed. Despite being one of the most-loved video game villains, Wesker was killed off in Resident Evil 5.

Bowser

Undoubtedly one of the most widely recognizable video game baddies is Bowser, an arch-rival of Super Mario. Also known as King of the Koopas, he has played the antagonist in the majority of the Mario games since its conception and provided a constant source of trouble in the beloved Mushroom Kingdom. The part-dragon, part-turtle has various motives for causing mayhem throughout the series ranging from kingdom domination to marrying Princess Peach.
